– Globalization, Crises and Health Systems: Confronting Regional Perspectives
Geneva, 19-21 April 2010
Health systems around the world are facing unprecedented challenges, many related to or exacerbated by globalization. The 2010 edition of the Geneva Health Forum aims to elucidate the global or transboundary issues that directly or indirectly influence health systems. It also aims to provide deeper insight into how health crises impact society as a whole.
The following will be addressed and debated:
- Crises reveal existing weaknesses and disparities and offer opportunities for health systems to function on new grounds
- Crises can be local, but are increasingly global in their reach, and their impacts on health systems call for critical examination
- Globalization tends to open new health services markets (structure, systems, workforce, insurances, etc.) which can engender reorganization and redistribution of roles within national health systems
- Exploring concrete examples of local and regional responses to crises and impacts of globalization offers a rich source from which innovative local and global approaches can be formulated
- New forms of governance that include the numerous new local and global partners in health must be identified
- Information technologies facilitate the dissemination of information to increasingly diversified actors, local and global -- a phenomenon which poses new challenges and opportunities
The Geneva Health Forum 2010 will tackle these issues by confronting regional perspectives, bringing together local and regional examples. It gives priority to facilitating exchanges and diffusing lessons learned from local and regional initiatives, which can offer potential solutions to the global issues at hand.

The European Congress on Tropical Medicine and International Health will take place in Verona, Italy, from 6th to 10th September 2009.
Besides dealing with the classical aspects of Tropical Medicine including basic science, diagnostic/therapeutics and disease control, the congress will maintain a constant and central focus on its main theme: Equity, Human Rights and Access to Care.
The conference organizers strongly encourage all interested professionals to seize this opportunity to present their research and discuss strategies to reduce inequality, to broaden the access to basic health services and to reach the underserved.
The Congress will also put a great emphasis on Transferability of Research results into actual practice. We are interested to discuss how evidence obtained from research is transferred/not transferred into actual policy and practice.
The conference will also discuss the North-South gap in health research, in all main aspects: space devoted to global health in medical journals; role of researchers from the South in relevant publications; share of research which is actually devoted to priority areas; important gaps that remain to be filled in research in tropical medicine and international health; difficulties in financing health system research.

Young voices in research for health
The Global Forum for Health Research and The Lancet are sponsoring their fourth joint essay competition with the theme Innovating for the health of all, held in conjunction with Forum 2009, the annual meeting of the Global Forum that takes place in Havana, Cuba, from 16 to 20 November.
The Global Forum's vision is of a world in which the potential of research and innovation is fully utilized to address the health problems of the poor. Innovation is defined as the creation, development and implementation of a new product, process or service, with the aim of improving efficiency, effectiveness or competitive advantage. Research for health therefore goes far beyond medicine and biology, to include sectors such as economics, environment, politics, sociology and others. Innovating for the health of all involves both social and technological innovation.
